Friday, July 12 – Rewind

The last day of camp has come and gone, and although it was definitely bittersweet having to say goodbye to all 23 of the wonderful faces we got to know this week, our campers didn’t let that slow them down for a second. In the morning, our campers excitedly trickled into the studio as they talked about what they thought of today’s book and how excited they were for author Lisa Graff to come and visit. Campers were then allowed to choose from a range of activities, whether it was rehearsing a play in the Thalia theater, playing Apples to Apples or The Legend of Zelda trivia in the studio, or reading quietly in the cafe.

Thursday, July 11 – Nikhil Out Loud

Thursday already! Oh how the time flies! Today was an incredible and fun filled day at book club camp. We started off our day by doing some writing and reading, while counselor Caitlin led a game of Apples to Apples. Once everyone was settled in, we kicked off our morning with a new take on a familiar favorite! I (counselor Star) led our campers in a game of Ultimate Werewolf. Similar to Werewolf, Ultimate Werewolf requires some voice acting and improvisation. This activity draws inspiration from today’s book Nikhil Out Loud, which centers around a kid voice actor. Our campers came up with so many interesting and unique characters, varied in age, tone and pitch. Everyone got really into their characters and were shocked when it was revealed that camper Isabelle was the werewolf all along! A greater plot twist than Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in my opinion.

Tuesday, July 9 – Winnie Zeng Unleashes a Legend

It’s Day 2, and camp is in full swing! Our returning campers from last year are already hard at work preparing theatre productions for our end-of-week Share session. Among the plays in the works are a musical comedy and a murder mystery on an international scale. As campers arrived this morning, camper Claudia announced the highly-anticipated cast list for the musical.

Monday, July 8 – ¡¡Manu!!

We had a great start to the week today at the Thalia Kids Book Club Camp! In the morning, we welcomed 23 campers as we returned to the studio, our pre-Covid location. We had an energetic bunch: while our campers decorated their binders, they talked to each other about books, movies, and video games. Everyone was excited to see both familiar and new faces!

All About Week 1!

Happy July, dear readers! Another summer is upon us, which means the Thalia Kids Book Club Camp is BACK with a brand-new lineup of your new favorite books. Our campers will be taking over Symphony Space starting on Monday, ready to write, draw, perform, and play; meet our featured authors and a Week 1 special guest; and travel the city for two field trips.
