All About Week 2!

Hello again, my fellow bookworms! We’re fresh off our first week of camp this summer and couldn’t be happier; our campers, guests, and staff brought their best right off the bat, and we’re all set to keep a good thing going! Week 2 gets started bright and early on the 19th, and we’re sure our next group of guests and campers will follow in Week 1’s footsteps. Curious about the incredible books we’re reading this week? Wednesday, July 14 – Daughter of the White Rose

The third day of camp turned out to be extra fun. Like every morning, we started off with a poll. Today’s book was Daughter of the White Rose by Diane Zahler, a certified history buff! The novel, based on the story of Richard III and the Princes in the Tower, was set in England during the Wars of the Roses. We asked campers about their favorite historical fiction, which started a lively discussion (with several book recs, including Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan and These Shallow Graves by Jennifer Donnelly). The kids had remarkable insight as to why they would NOT want to live in the 15th century, prompted by one of the poll questions. Many brought up medicine, quality of life, and social conditions for women as reasons why they’re happier in the modern era. The campers never fail to impress us!

Tuesday, July 13 – Swimming with Dolphins

Welcome back! Today’s morning activities took direct inspiration from our featured book, Swimming with Dolphins. KT, the heroine of today’s book, uses a wheelchair, which she nicknames “Sprinkle.” She also names the family van “Beluga.” So we started the day with a scavenger hunt where we each had to find an object we use daily. Once in hand, we had to think about what it does for us and how we feel about it. Finally, we had to try to come up with an appropriate name for it. We ended up with some fun and surprising results: a pencil named “Emoji,” a face mask (so timely!) named “Rose,” a TV remote named “Wand,” and counselors’ cars named “Jill” and “Tucker,” among many others.
